RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY presents J ROCC (USA / STONE THROW)
Following hot on the heels of a full-capacity national tour featuring Clark (UK/Warp), the Red Bull Music Academy Club Night series returns in February, inviting Beat Junkies founder, Madlib’s go-to-DJ, California-native and Stones Throw Records legend J ROCC to take us on a musical journey across hip hop, house, latin, afro, techno, disco, boogie and more.
The second Red Bull Music Academy Club Night series of 2015, will kick off on 18 February in Perth, with FREE club dates to follow in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. With the Red Bull Music Academy 2015 applications phase now in full swing, previous lecturer J ROCC will also be participating in an ‘On the Couch’ style info session at the Toff In Town in Melbourne (20 February), discussing his musical influences and providing valuable insight into how to apply for the Red Bull Music Academy in Paris this year.
Not a stranger to our shores, J ROCC has delighted Australian audiences in previous years supporting Madlib during his 'Medicine Tour' and Breakestra in 2010. This visit will be his first as a solo artist following the 2011 release of his debut LP, “Some Cold Rock Stuff”, dubbed by the BBC as “a disc worth spending plenty of time with“.
Starting out in ’81, inspired by a Malcolm Mclaren record cover displaying turntables, J ROCC quickly picked up his own decks and joined Californian DJ group PSK not long after. Fast-forward 10 years – having become a household name on the local LA scene – J ROCC founded the world famous Beat Junkies DJ group in 1992 recruiting core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own productions, J ROCC was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the supergroup's live events.
